First-Time HIFU: What to Expect on the Day

I remember what it felt like before my very first ultrasound scan as a student. The nerves, the questions running through my head, the not quite knowing what to expect. That feeling never fully goes away, even after 20 years. So I completely understand if you're feeling a bit anxious about your first HIFU treatment.
The good news? It's genuinely one of the most straightforward treatments you'll ever have. No needles, no anaesthesia, no recovery room. You walk in, you walk out. But I know “straightforward” doesn't help much when you don't know what “straightforward” actually looks like. So let me take you through the entire experience, step by step.
Before You Arrive
There's very little preparation needed. Come with a clean face, free of makeup, sunscreen, and heavy moisturisers. If you forget, no stress. I have cleansing wipes at the clinic. But arriving with a bare face saves us a few minutes.
Avoid direct sun exposure and sunburn in the days leading up to your appointment. If your skin is sunburnt, we'll need to reschedule, as treating compromised skin isn't safe or effective. This is especially relevant here in Brisbane where sun exposure and collagen go hand in hand.
That's it. No fasting, no numbing cream, no pre-treatment medication. Eat normally, drink water, and show up.
Arriving at UltraGlo
UltraGlo is a private home clinic in Sunnybank Hills. Not a busy shopping centre salon with people coming and going. It's just you and me in a quiet, relaxed setting. Most of my clients tell me they feel at ease the moment they walk in, and that's exactly what I designed it for.
If it's your very first visit, we'll start with a free consultation. I'll assess your skin, talk through your goals, and explain exactly what HIFU can (and can't) do for you. If you're not sure whether you're a good candidate, I covered that in detail in my guide on whether HIFU is right for you.
There is zero pressure to go ahead on the day. Some clients book a consultation first and come back for treatment later. Totally fine.
The Treatment: What Actually Happens
Once we're ready to begin, you'll lie comfortably on the treatment bed. I apply a thin layer of ultrasound gel to the area we're treating. If you've ever had an ultrasound scan (pregnancy, medical, anything), you'll recognise the gel. It helps the handpiece glide smoothly and ensures the ultrasound energy is delivered precisely.
Then I work the HIFU handpiece across the treatment area in a methodical pattern. Each pulse delivers focused ultrasound energy to specific depths beneath your skin. This is where my background as a Sonographer really matters. I'm not just following a template. I'm reading your tissue in real time and adjusting depth and energy for your specific anatomy.
Does It Hurt? Let's Be Honest
I won't pretend you feel nothing. You'll feel warmth and a tingling, prickling sensation with each pulse. Some areas are more sensitive than others. The jawline and forehead tend to be the most noticeable. The cheeks and neck are usually very comfortable.
Most of my clients describe it as a “warm buzzing” feeling. Not painful, but definitely present. A few have told me it's actually quite relaxing once they settle into the rhythm.
Here's the thing: that sensation is the ultrasound energy reaching the deep collagen layers. It means the treatment is working. And because there are no needles or incisions involved, there's no sharp pain. It's completely manageable.
If at any point you need a break, you just say so. We go at your pace.
How Long Does It Take?
That depends on what we're treating. Here's a rough guide:
- Brow lift: Around 5 minutes
- Eyes or forehead: About 10 minutes
- Cheeks, chin, or jaw: 15 minutes each
- Full face: 45 minutes
- Full Face Glow Facial: 30 minutes
You can check the full list of treatments and durations on our website. Most clients are in and out within the hour, even for a full face session.
Right After Treatment
I wipe off the gel and that's it. You're done.
There is genuinely zero downtime. You can drive yourself home, go back to work, pick up the kids, whatever your day looks like. Your skin might look slightly flushed (like a mild blush), but this fades within an hour or two. Most people wouldn't even notice.
Some clients feel a mild tenderness or warmth in the treated area for a day or two. This is completely normal. It's your body responding to the treatment, starting the collagen rebuilding process that will continue for months. I covered the full timeline in my post on what to expect week by week after HIFU.
Aftercare: Keeping It Simple
Post-treatment care is refreshingly minimal:
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Your skin is about to do a lot of collagen building and hydration is your skin's best friend.
- Wear SPF. Protect your skin from UV exposure, especially in the first week. Brisbane sun is no joke.
- Skip harsh products. Avoid retinols, acids, and exfoliants for 48 hours. Let your skin focus on healing.
- Be gentle. No vigorous facial massage or scrubbing for a few days.
That's really it. No bandages, no ice packs, no hiding at home. Following these simple steps also supports our 100% money back guarantee, which requires that you follow the post-care advice.
The Most Common Thing I Hear Afterwards
“That was it?”
Honestly, most first-timers are surprised by how undramatic the whole experience is. They've built it up in their minds, imagined something clinical and intense, and then it's just a warm, comfortable 30 to 45 minutes in a quiet room. No drama. No recovery. Just the beginning of your skin doing something incredible beneath the surface.
The real excitement comes later. Over the following weeks and months, as fresh collagen builds, you'll notice gradual tightening, more definition, and a firmer feel to your skin. It's not an overnight transformation. It's your body healing itself from the inside out. And personally, I think that's more beautiful than any quick fix.
Still Have Questions?
That's completely normal. Check out our HIFU FAQ page for answers to the most common questions, or browse our pricing so there are no surprises. And if you'd rather just chat it through in person, that's what the free consultation is for.
I genuinely love helping people through their first HIFU experience. There is nothing better than seeing someone relax into the treatment and leave thinking, “Why did I wait so long?”
