How to Combine HIFU with Your Skincare Routine

Skincare routine products paired with HIFU treatment for collagen boosting results

HIFU does incredible work beneath the surface of your skin, stimulating fresh collagen and gradually lifting and tightening. But what you do at home every morning and evening plays a real part in how well those results develop and how long they last.

After over 20 years working with ultrasound technology, I have seen the difference a good skincare routine makes for HIFU clients. Not a complicated 12 step routine. Not a cupboard full of expensive products. Just a few well chosen ingredients that genuinely support what HIFU is doing underneath.

Here is what I recommend to my clients at UltraGlo.

Why Your Skincare Routine Matters More After HIFU

HIFU triggers a process called neocollagenesis. Your body starts producing new collagen in the treated areas, and that process unfolds over weeks and months. Think of HIFU as setting the foundation. Your skincare routine is what helps that foundation build properly.

If your skin is dehydrated, inflamed, or unprotected from UV damage, collagen production can slow down. The right routine keeps your skin in the best possible condition for that rebuilding process.

This is not about buying more products. It is about choosing the right ones and using them consistently.

The Four Pillars of a HIFU Friendly Routine

I keep it simple for my clients. There are four things your skin needs to get the most from HIFU treatments.

1. Hydration

Collagen needs water to form properly. Well hydrated skin also heals faster and looks plumper between treatments. Hydration is your skin's best friend, and it becomes even more important when your body is actively building new collagen.

Look for a hyaluronic acid serum or a lightweight moisturiser that you actually enjoy using. The best product is one you will use every single day.

2. Sun Protection

This is non negotiable. UV exposure breaks down collagen faster than almost anything else. If you are investing in HIFU to build collagen, skipping sunscreen is like filling a bucket with a hole in it.

Use a broad spectrum SPF 50+ every single morning, even on cloudy days. Brisbane gets strong UV year round, including through the cooler months.

3. Collagen Supporting Ingredients

Certain ingredients have solid evidence for supporting collagen health from the outside in. The main ones I recommend are:

  • Vitamin C serum (L ascorbic acid, 10 to 20 percent). Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis and also provides antioxidant protection. Use it in the morning under sunscreen.
  • Retinol or retinal (at night). Retinoids stimulate cell turnover and support collagen production. Start with a low strength if you are new to it, and build up gradually.
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3). This supports your skin barrier, reduces redness, and works well alongside other actives. It is gentle enough for most skin types.

You do not need all three from day one. If you are only going to add one thing, start with a good vitamin C serum in the morning and SPF on top.

4. Gentle Cleansing

Harsh cleansers strip your skin barrier and create inflammation. Inflammation is the enemy of collagen. Use a gentle, pH balanced cleanser that removes makeup and sunscreen without leaving your skin feeling tight or dry.

Double cleansing in the evening (an oil or balm first, then a gentle wash) is a good approach if you wear makeup or heavy sunscreen during the day.

What a Morning and Evening Routine Looks Like

Here is a straightforward routine that supports HIFU results without overcomplicating things.

Morning:

  1. Gentle cleanser
  2. Vitamin C serum
  3. Lightweight moisturiser (with hyaluronic acid if possible)
  4. SPF 50+ sunscreen

Evening:

  1. Oil cleanser or balm (to remove sunscreen and makeup)
  2. Gentle water based cleanser
  3. Retinol or retinal (start 2 to 3 nights per week)
  4. Moisturiser

That is it. No 10 step routine required.

What to Avoid Between HIFU Sessions

There are a few things I ask my clients to be careful with, especially in the weeks following a treatment.

  • Harsh exfoliants and strong acids. Your skin is already doing a lot of work rebuilding. Aggressive scrubs or high concentration peels can cause irritation and slow down recovery.
  • Excessive heat. Saunas, very hot showers on the face, and prolonged direct sun exposure can all increase inflammation. Be mindful for the first 48 hours especially.
  • New products all at once. Introduce one new product at a time. If something irritates your skin, you want to know which product caused it.

For detailed guidance on the first few days after treatment, my post HIFU skincare guide covers everything step by step.

How Often Should You Have HIFU?

Most clients see optimal results with one to two sessions per year, depending on their skin and goals. Between sessions, your daily routine is what keeps the momentum going.

I think of it like exercise. HIFU is the workout that builds the muscle. Your skincare routine is the nutrition that keeps it strong. One without the other still helps, but together they work much harder.

If you are curious about what those results look like over time, my week by week results timeline gives you a clear picture.

Do You Need Expensive Products?

No. A good vitamin C serum, a reliable sunscreen, and a basic moisturiser from the pharmacy can do the job beautifully. You do not need to spend hundreds on skincare to support your HIFU results.

What matters is consistency and choosing products with evidence behind them. Fancy packaging does not mean better ingredients.

The Honest Truth

HIFU delivers real, measurable results for skin tightening and lifting. I see it every week in clinic. But the clients who get the best results are the ones who also take care of their skin at home.

It does not need to be complicated. Hydrate, protect, support collagen, and be gentle. That is the formula.
