HIFU for Different Skin Types: A Brisbane Clinician's Honest Guide

If you have ever asked yourself, "Will HIFU work for my skin type?" you are asking exactly the right question.
I am Pooja, founder of UltraGlo in Sunnybank Hills. As a qualified Sonographer with over 20 years of medical ultrasound experience and a qualification in dermal interventions, I plan every HIFU treatment around your skin, your goals, and your comfort.
The short answer is this. HIFU can be suitable for many skin types when your treatment is customised properly. The longer answer, which is the one that matters, is how and why your plan should be adjusted for you.
What stays the same across all skin types
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target deeper support layers under the skin. This stimulates fresh collagen and helps with tightening and lifting over time. If you are new to the science, my guide on whether HIFU is right for you is a helpful starting point.
The core mechanism does not change by skin type. What changes is your treatment design, your pacing, and how we manage your skin response before and after your session.
Skin type factors I assess before treatment
During your consultation, I look at several factors that influence how I structure your session.
- Skin thickness and laxity. Thinner skin and thicker skin can both be treated, but settings and strategy differ.
- Sensitivity level. Some clients have highly reactive skin, so comfort planning matters.
- Current inflammation. If skin is irritated, we may delay treatment until your skin barrier settles.
- Age related collagen decline. Expectations and timelines vary across life stages. You can also read my article on how skin changes with age.
- Your primary goal. Jawline definition, lower face lift, neck tightening, or overall firmness each need a different focus.
How HIFU planning differs by skin presentation
Rather than putting people into rigid labels, I focus on what your skin is showing today. Here are common patterns I see in clinic.
Sensitive and reactive skin
With sensitive skin, treatment can still be appropriate. The key is a calm, measured approach. I prioritise comfort, assess your recent product use, and give you a clear aftercare plan. My post treatment routine guide explains exactly how to support healing and protect results.
Early ageing with mild laxity
This is where HIFU often shines. If you are starting to notice softening around the jaw, subtle droop, or loss of firmness, HIFU can provide natural looking lift without downtime. You can review full options on our treatments page and pricing page.
Mature skin with more advanced laxity
HIFU can still improve firmness and contour in mature skin, but I always discuss realistic outcomes. If your laxity is advanced, HIFU may improve quality and definition, but it will not replicate surgery. I am very direct about this because trust matters more than overpromising.
Common concern: pigmentation and uneven tone
This is important. HIFU targets deeper structural layers and collagen support. It is not designed to treat pigmentation directly. If pigmentation is your main concern, I will tell you honestly that HIFU is not the primary answer for that specific issue.
If your main concern is lift and firmness, HIFU can be an excellent fit. If your main concern is pigment or surface tone, we need to set the right treatment expectation from day one.
Why personalisation matters more than skin type labels
The biggest mistake I see is generic treatment plans. Your anatomy, collagen status, skin behaviour, and goals are unique. That is why every UltraGlo session is personalised, not templated.

My honest recommendation
Do not choose HIFU based on internet labels alone. Choose it based on a proper assessment by someone who understands ultrasound deeply and will tell you the truth.
